NPS Planners typically look at four categories of investigation. Here is a sample of questions the planning team will explore.

  • How is the Statue of Liberty being affected by the increase in visitors to the monument?
  • What other resources are affected by high numbers of visitors, including Native American archeological resources and the designed landscape of Liberty Island? In what ways and by what activities?
  • How can visitors come to understand the symbolic meanings of the park?
  • What should be done to ensure that visitors are satisfied with park facilities and have a safe and enjoyable experience?
  • What kind of experiences should be provided to visitors at the security screening areas in New York’s Battery Park and New Jersey’s Liberty State Park?
  • What kind of reservation system would help to facilitate visits to the Statue?
  • What is the most effective use of buildings and spaces given the park’s limited facilities for offices, collection storage, other support needs, and storage of maintenance equipment and other materials?
  • What is the most effective use of public-private partnerships to accomplish park goals?
  • To what extent should the park embrace opportunities for joint actions between the Statue and Ellis and other national parks?
